Calligraphy

I started drawing characters because I was studying symbolic elements. Originally, I was very interested in the arrows that appear in Paul Klee's work, Chinami Nakajima's work "existence → mumyo", and the characters in nishiki-e and picture scrolls. I thought that if I draw symbols as clues to explore the stories rather than letters for reading, I could expand the range of my expressions. 

At the beginning, my works were ridiculed as a "signboard shop", but I could get the balance between the characters and the color planes gradually.

At the exhibitions, some customers often ask me, "What is it written on?"  All of them are in Japanese, but the characters in my works are drawn by breaking down kanji, hiragana, and sometimes Roman alphabet.

In addition, although the characters are readable, they are intentionally drawn symbolically, so when looking at them, I hope you will enjoy them by imagining them from the motifs, title, and atmosphere of the work.

文字を描き始めたのは、記号的要素の研究をしていたことがきっかけです。もともとパウル・クレーの作品中に出てくる矢印や中島千波先生の作品『existence→mumyo（無明）』などの文字のような要素、錦絵、絵巻物の文字、に強い関心がありました。読むための文字ではなく、物語を探る手掛かりとして記号を取り入れたらより表現の幅が広がるのではないかと思いました。

初期は「看板屋さん」などと揶揄されましたが、次第に空間の中の記号的要素と色面のバランスがわかってきました。

展覧会ではお客様から「何て書いてあるの？」とよく質問されます。すべて日本語ですが、作品中の文字は漢字やひらがな、時にはローマ字をくずして描いています。
また文章自体は読解できる内容ですが、わざと記号的に描いておりますので、ご高覧の際にはモチーフやタイトル、作品の雰囲気などから想像して楽しんでいただけたらと思います。
