Cats & others

I started drawing cats around the summer of 2018.

It was around the time when I began to feel distrustful of the policies of my place of employment. Even if I consulted with my family and friends about that distrust, no one trusted my opinions. Because I was less than a year as a member of society. While responding to unreasonable challenges and being put under false accusations, I expressed what was accumulated inside by screaming cats.

Having pets is prohibited in my home, so cats are stray cats for me. Of course, stray cats that enter the barn and give birth to children or keep crying under the eaves during the night are not welcomed. I often draw cats from the experience of overlapping stray cats that are hated and myself who felt lonely.

Besides cats, I often draw mollusks such as octopuses and slugs. These symbolize annoying things to me. These motifs are annoying symbols because of I have the image that if I drive them away, they come again many time.  The octopus is a symbol of an absurd demand that I felt as a member of society, and the slug is a symbol of Covid-19.

猫を描くようになったのは2018年の夏ごろからです。

勤め先の方針に不信感を抱き始めた頃でした。その不信感を周囲に相談しても、社会人1年にも満たない私の意見は誰も信用しませんでした。濡れ衣や無理難題に応えながら、内にたまっていたものを叫ぶ猫によって表現していました。

私の家庭ではペット禁止であったため猫といえば野良猫です。納屋に入り子供を産んだり、軒下で夜中鳴き続ける野良猫はもちろん歓迎されていません。そんなふうに嫌悪されている野良猫と、孤独を感じていた自分を重ねた経験から頻繁に猫を描いています。

猫のほかにタコやナメクジなどの軟体動物もよく描いています。これらは私にとって迷惑な存在を象徴しています。追い払っても追い払ってもまとわりついてくるイメージから煩わしいものとしてモチーフにしています。タコは社会人になって感じた不条理な要求、ナメクジはコロナの象徴です。
